Did photoshop release the 7.0.1 version on the commercial market?

7.0 is what you can buy in a box or download from Adobe. 7.0.1 is an update that you can download from Adobe. You cannot, I believe, purchase a 7.0.1.

yes they did realease 7.01 to retail.

Once a patch is released the retail packages will contain CDs with the
patched version. The version number is always printed in very small
numbers on the CD.

I speak from my own experience of buying 7.0 [upgrade version] from a reputable supplier very recently. Downloading and applying the update is no big deal.

The Design bundle I bought about three months ago had Photoshop 7.0.1 on the
CD already - no update necessary.

Yes. I just bought Photoshop from Amazon.com about a month ago and it
was with the 7.0.1 version.
