Difficulties Using the Freeform Tool

You need to ungroup the rectangles first. Select the rectangle and
choose Modify > Ungroup.

Thanks so much for your help -- that did the trick! That's the strangest thing that you only have ungroup rectangles.

I'm sure that there is some good reason as to why this needs to be done.

It has to do with their being rectangle primitives. Don't ask me what
that means. :-) I've never seen a good explanation of the term. It's
propose is to enable changes to the radius of the rectangle corners.
