    Default digital jewelry photo

    Hi,

I need to create digital photographs of small pieces of gold and
silver jewelry for a web site.

I would be grateful for suggestions or feedback on digital cameras
with good macro ability to capture detail on items less than 3". I
would also be interested in recommendation for lighting to avoid
shadows and reflections while maintaining color fidelity

    Thanks for your help

Nikon with their 4xxx/5xxx series has some great macro abilities (the
4500 can get as near as 3/4 inch); and cheaper digicams like the Canon
    PowerShot A70 (or the 2MP A60) can use close-up lenses (+4 diopter)
thru the use of a lens-adapter. But the built-in flash is pretty much
useless when using the lens-adapter and with close-up shots - it
causes an unwanted flash shadow :-(

Olympus has a good short description of jewelry photography techniques
for sale on their web photo school site. They show lighting setup,
discuss color balance, specular highlights, and do a little with digital
    editing. It's a good article.

They also have a whole section on digital photography for online sales.

    Let me tell you something:

if the object is small and not too much 3-dimensional, just put it on a
scanner glass! Absolutely best detail and absolutely most evenly
    distributed light!

I noticed that when I scanned some gold coins that were too difficult to
read even with a magnifying glass.
