Direct selection tool corrupted - Adobe Illustrator Windows

All of the sudden when I select an object with the selection tool it acts as if it is the direct selection tool. For example, if I select a box - then it will select the 4 corners of the box, but not the whole object. I no longer get the option to modify the the scale of the shape from the handles. There aren't even any handles. Have i accidently turned on some preference? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, including preference, but to no avail. I work at a weekly magazine and need to get this fixed quickly, my editor is not too understanding about these things, so a quick reply would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Adam:

Try Crtl + H and go to FAQ#4 in Illustrator FAQ at the top of the forum list. steve

    Adam,

The answer to your question is in this FAQ:

Teri Pettit, "Why can't I resize objects with the selection tool any more?" #, 1 Jul 2005 8:16 pm </cgi-bin/webx?50.eed5198.3bbb296c>

The loss of the Bounding Box controls is not that debilitating, you know. I always keep them turned off intentionally because I hate the way they get in the way of seeing or selecting anchor points that lie along the bounding box edge or corner. The Scale tool is so much more flexible.

    ETA: Stephen, it's FAQ #6. :)

Thanks so much. How silly of me.

Also thanks for the advice on keeping the bounding box off.
I will try it and see how it goes.

Amen, Teri. That's exactly the way I work.
