Directives position - ASP Components

Sorry for the dumb question... Have read some posts instructing to put the response.buffer as the first line of an asp page. But the first lines shouldn't be the directives? Just to confirm, response.buffer must be the first line of code after the directives? Not a dumb question!

    The 's must be the first lines. Response.buffer doesn't have to be the
    first line, but it has to appear prior to any response being written.

    Okay:

    <% Language=VBScript %>
    <%
    '''lots of asp code that doesn't have any response.write lines in it

    response.buffer = true

    %>

    FWIW, W2K/IIS5 response.buffers by default. I'd imagine the same is true
    for W2K3/IIS6.
