Dirty looks at Cash Converters - Photography

Well on my daily rounds looking for bargains I spotted a nice Sony digital. 4.1 MP. The same model as the DSC030 but 4.1MP, I am sure someone knows. At only $495 in good condition I was thinking about it maybe I could offer $400. I liked this model because it has a viewfinder the Sony I have gives great pictures but has only the LCD screen. Checking the camera, no memory stick. Oh ok, what accessoris DO come with it then? Answer, a case and cable. Which turned out to be a USB cable. So battery inside camera and ...

    loud? *LOL*

I spoke to a guy that worked in a hock shop for 15 years. They would pay
Granny $15 and sell it for $300. Would KNOWINGLY buy a camera dropped in the
ocean and sell it for normal price.

They know exactly what they are buying and what to sell it for. If you get
stung on the deal they just say it is your fault.

I was told as a rule of thumb, that the buy for 25% of market value and sell
for 75% of market value but the prices I have been watching are close to
105% of value (i.e. I can buy for cheaper new elsewhere)

They would pay $40 and ask $350 ....... how do you think that they can
afford 3 staff and hold that much worthless crap in hand.

A few years ago, I was selling my deceased aunt's camera gear. I didn't know
anything about the gear at the time, and so went to a few places to sell it
to them. Ted's offered $300, Michaels offered $1100, and just for fun, I
went to Cash Converters. They offered $600, fully double the shysters at
Teds. When a couple of years later, I became interested in photography, I
went to Ted's who had a special on the gear I wanted, and got them to write
down a price. I took that price (about a 20% saving) got it price matched
elsewhere, then returned to the Teds to tell exactly why I bought elsewhere.
They just ummed and ahhed. I smiled and walked out.

(BTW knowing what I know now, I think Michael's paid too much for the gear.
$900 was probably the fair point at that time)

I know of a guy with some Hasselblad gear. He walked around and the highest
offer he got was $2000 from the various professional camera stores. He
approached a friend of mine and was offered $5000. Obviously he took the
    deal.

One of those SAME camera stores found out my friend had the gear and was
desperate to buy one of the lenses because they had a customer waiting for
one and was willing to pay $2500 for it. Greed is a terrible thing.
