Disk space required for install
I tried to install the IDCS demo last night on my Windows XP laptop, and the install aborted, saying I need 94MB more disk space.
I have my hard drive set up in three partitions: one for the system (E), one for programs (C), and one for pictures and music. The system partition is small, and there is very little space left on it. The program partition, however, has several GB of space on it. It seems the install program is trying to put files on my system drive, when I want it to put them on my program drive.
My question: if I install the non-demo version, am I going to encounter the same problem? How much space *on the system drive* does the program require?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
Rebecca

another issue entirely.
I'm not sure why you are breaking your drive up so, but you might want to
increase the space allotted for the primary partition.

Re: Disk space required for install
Unfortunately, it was broken up long ago by the person who set up the computer, and to re-allot the space would run the risk of having to do a complete re-install, which I'm trying to avoid pretty much at all costs. I'm told it's a good idea in theory, in that it insulates the system files from the rest of the computer, but it definitely didn't forsee issues like this.
I guess my question is -- is there a difference in the install process from the demo to the real version? Or are they both going to want to unpack onto my system drive? I don't want to spend the money on a program I can't get to install on my computer.

Re: Disk space required for install
PartitionMagic was created just for this scenario. It can easily re-arreange
your partitions. It's not without some risk, but IMHO the risk is equal to
loading any application software. This is safe stuff, and it works very
well.

No meaningful difference. And I suspect that running out of room on your
system partition is causing performance issues across the board, and you may
have similar trouble with other apps. ID may do things a bit different, but
not much.
You really need a couple gigs free (at least) on the system partition,
unless you've moved your scratch disk and frankly I don't think that's worth
the hassle.
As for the separate partitions, I also believe having a separate system
partition is a good idea. It makes system recovery faster, makes backups
easier, and keeps me from poking around where I shouldn't be, since all my
data are elsewhere. All my apps are on that partition as well as Windows.

Re: Disk space required for install
Any problems you have with the demo will likely be seen with the retail
version. But in general, you have a very serious problem with or without
ID. You need more free space or you going to wind up with more issues
down the road.

Re: Disk space required for install
You can easily get a new drive with about 160 gigs for less than $100. Maybe you should consider getting one of those UDMA/100 drives they are selling so cheap and use that for storage.
You can use the existing small drive as a system drive (un-partitioned) and end your hard drive space troubles.
I know nothing about your system since you were very vague about it but if you are going to go with a large drive, be aware that there is a 136 GB barrier on BIOS systems that were revised prior to 1999. You will need Windows XP Service Pack 1 to use it to the full capacity, use a Dynamic Drive Overlay (DDO) or you can partition into partitions 135 Gig or less to be able to use it.
If upgrading is not an option you are going to need to either follow the suggestions of these other folks or uninstall some programs from your C: drive to make room.
In my opinion, a good size for my system partition would be anywhere between 30-40 Gigs, but that's just me.

As Bob notes, this will likely return to bite you again even if you do
yourself the disservice of doing page layout without Indy.
