Default display quality and disapearing faces...

hello to everyone!

first of all take a look at this file....

no1: http://blubb.at/bb_work/work01.htm

it has about 800k and 1750 faces...

after reading some postings in this forum like these:

http://www.noisecrime.com/develop/techdemo/d85/demos/datasettest.htm

http://webforums.macromedia.com/director/messageview.cfm?catid=268&threadid=569261&highligh t_key=y&keyword1=mesh&keyword2=cubes#2038250

i got it to run twice as fast as at this example...

no2: http://blubb.at/bb_work

the main improvement was to merge models in max.
both files have the same amount of faces...

but in file no1 i merged all faces which had no transparency...
so i got about 60 models les in director, but the improvement in rendering speed was amazing.
before: the ani_cam10 was running at 12 fps on a p3 with 500mhz
now: the ani_cam10 is running at 30 fps on the same machine...

i merged also the whole faces of every facade which had transparencies in them....

but the problem is now the following:

try this one...

http://blubb.at/bb_work/work01.htm

click on :
keyb_cam06

at the beginning everything is correct.
but then the view switches...

the tree and the loggias dissapear.
if you move then towards the model with the cursor-keys they suddenly appear again...

it is also the same if you move along the z-axis with the A-key

has anyone an idea what happens here?
......

you can see the same effect if you play the

ani_cam10

when the camera moves around the corner...

....

thanx in advance for any comment....

so long

john

Default Re: display quality and disapearing faces...

Just as a suggestion, try ensuring every texture in every layer is of the same bitdepth, eg if there is a layer with a 32bit texture, then make all the textures 32bit in that model. I had a similar problem which this seemed to fix on most chipsets, although I can't be sure it's due to the same issue.

Default Re: display quality and disapearing faces...

hi johannes!
we are also often fighting with this problem. yet we figured out that it has
somthing to do with the bounding boxes of grouped objects. if the bounding
box of objects with tranperency overlap the bounding boxes of other objects,
it often happens, that the transparent objects apear and disapaer, as if the
render engine can't decide whether to display it or not.
the only solution we found was to rearrange the groups in 3dsmax (which
become single objects in the w3d-file) in a way that the bounding boxes of
the groups overlap each other as few as possible.

hope it gives you an idea of a workaround ;-)
