    Thanks
I tried both your suggestions but the result is still the same. I managed to distil one ps file that would not previously distil and thought great, I am there at last. but the problem returned with subsequent ps files.

%%[ Warning: Helvetica-BoldOblique not found, using Font Substitution. Font cannot be embedded.]%%
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: showpage ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I can sort the missing font problem by substituting another font in the original document so I am not worried about that, just the i/o error.

    Wendy,

How many different versions of Helvetica do you have on your system? Try
to remove all versions except one. It would be simplest for you to leave
a complete family of a postscript version of the font. Make sure you
check all locations that fonts are stored, which under OS X many
    (Library/Fonts, System/Library/Fonts, home/Library/Fonts, and any other
location used by a fonts manager, Quark or Acrobat font locatation).

    Wendy,

I have seen many variations of the 'ioerror' - virtually all cases have
resulted in issues with NAV ... Even though I am not 100% sure ...
software can be wriggly sometimes ...

Please check for any instance of NAV and remove for the time being ..
