Re: Distiller 6 works when Distiller 7 errors
Sorry Aandi, I never got back to you. I didn't keep the error log and didn't try to recreate that problem.
But I've found another instance where v6 will produce a pdf when v7 has problems.
I made a postscript file from a 48 page doc which distilled ok in v7, but when I was checking the pdf, the warning "Array length is out of range" appeared on the of the pages and text and images were missing, on that page and 3 others. I tried a number of things, re-opened the images and resaved in a different format, reimported etc, but it kept happening.
So I distilled the same postscript file with v6, and it worked perfectly.
I would be very wary of removing v6 for some time.

Re: Distiller 6 works when Distiller 7 errors
I have NEVER gotten Distiller 7 to produce a pdf from a postscript, nor has anyone in my office. We just use Distiller 6. It comes as a surprise to me that this isn't a recognized bug. I assumed someone at Adobe was working on it.

Never assume anything. Without files to reproduce, nothing will ever get fixed, if indeed something needs fixing.

Re: Distiller 6 works when Distiller 7 errors
I use Distiller 7 most of the time and it works fine. It's only when I have a faulty pdf file produced or an error during distilling that I go back to v6.

This file with "array length out of range". Was it originated in
QuarkXPress 5.0?

Re: Distiller 6 works when Distiller 7 errors
No Aandi, it was originated in QXP 6.5.
This morning a different postscript file from a QXP4 document failed in Distiller 7 with this error:
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: *^ ]%%
Stack:
-mark-
-save-
5
So I made the pdf with Distiller 6 with no problems. However, just as a test, an hour or two later I got a perfect pdf out of Distiller 7 with the identical postscript file.
It seems to me that Distiller 7 is a bit flaky.

This is potentially important. When you say "identical" do you mean
* a file produced the same way from the same original, or
* the very same file, left on disk and unchanged since then?
I do wonder if this is an anti-virus issue. We have seen cases where
some anti-virus software "knocks over" Distiller, forcing bizarre and
unhelpful error messages.

Re: Distiller 6 works when Distiller 7 errors
By "identical" I mean the very same file, left on my desktop and unchanged since then.
I do not have any anti-virus software running at all, or even installed on my computer.
I'm on a Mac, PowerBook G4 17", running OS10.3.9 and have CS2 Premium.
