    Default Distiller bug?

I'm creating a .PS file from Quark. When I distill it in the Distiller that came with Acrobat 7 Professional, various places where there are Illustrator eps files, distiller is placing a rectangular box where the end-of-line is. If I bring the file over to the Distiller run under OS9, it comes out fine. If I open the art and resave in the new Illustrator (they're Illustrator 8 files) then they distill file. There are thousands of these files in the book I'm working on. Guess I'll have to Distill in the slowwwwwer OS 9 until Adobe fixes this. Anyone else have this problem?

The settings are "Press Quality" and, yes, I view them both in Acrobat 7. It shows both on the screen and on the printed page a rectangular box only in the file distilled with Tiger. You can view the PDFs at <http://www.necomp.net/pics/p86_os10.pdf> and <http://www.necomp.net/pics/p86_os9.pdf>

Take a look at your two files' Fonts properties. You will see that Helvetica in the defective one says it (and Courier, too) is a TrueType.

I have never used Apple's dfonts, so I don't know what you get for Helvetica and Courier. But I would bet that if you installed Type 1 Helvetica and Courier, and got rid of the dfonts, it would work.

You could also have a TrueType Helvetica and Courier. If you do, these are ripped-off fonts.

That's strange because I do have Helvetica and Courier Type 1 fonts loaded. I have Suitcase X1 set to "Load Type 1" fonts instead of the system fonts. Don't know why it would choose Truetype fonts when it distills.

After reading your post I took a look at Distiller. There is a checkbox under font locations that says, "Ignore TrueType versions of standard Postscript fonts." I checked this and redistilled the PDF and it seems ok now.
