    Default Distiller won't

Clean install of the Creative Suite on a Mac G5, fresh install of OS X
10.3.9 with all updates. The Mac has 2 gigs of SDRAM, and 130 gigs free
on the drive, dual 2 GHZ processor.

Printing PS from InDesign and trying to distill.

Distiller processes the file, and ends with either no error message or
"Can't process job because PDFLib failed to initialize". In both cases,
no PDF is produced, and Distiller either hangs with the SPOD or
    unexpectedly quits.

    Default Re: Distiller won't

The first thing to do is repair permissions. I'll admit right now that I don't have a lot of faith in this, but its worth a try with this particular problem. The next thing I would, (if not the first) is to create a new user and see if that works. Now, when both of those issues don't work the thing to do would be to remove all Adobefnt.lst files that you can find. I imagine that this is the real issue. Distiller is probably confused about font locations. The last and most desparate course of action is to turn off all of the PDFLib instances in the Distiller. To do this go to Settings > Edit Adobe PDF Settings..
In the General tab turn off "Object Level Compression:" and uncheck "Optimize for Fast Web View" and "Embed Thumbnails". The only other time PDFLib is used with the Distiller is when Security is applied at the Distilling stage. One can still add security to an existing PDF in Acrobat, as well as turning the other items back on using the Optimizer in the Advanced menu.

Let us know how it goes.

That was done several times, including immediately after a clean install

Didn't do that, but will file it for the future.

Nope. I regularly kill those f'ing adobefnt files.

That's closer, as the problem only presented itself with a set of job
options from one of our printers, although the same settings were
running merrily along on a G4.

In typical fashion, as soon as I asked the main tech from the printer
to stop by (they're in the same building) the problem was resolved.
Somehow, the distiller plist file was being corrupted and deleting it
(for about the 4th time) made the problem go away

    It was a bizarre day...
