Default Distiller won't work on my new G5

I just purchased a new G5 2.7 Dual Ghz with the new Tiger OS. I can not get Acrobat Distiller 5.0 to work on the new machine. I have the Classic OS on the computer also which is what Distiller launches in for me. It loaded and it launches but when I drag and drop files to distill, it doesn't create any PDF files. Any thoughts on this one? Does this mean I need to upgrade?

I have seen several reports of this. Nobody knows why, but it does
seem the case that Distiller 5 doesn't work any more, for some or all
    people.

Acrobat 7 runs, after a fashion. There are still some issues.

Distiller 5 should work. Was 10.4 pre-installed on your computer?

Yes, 10.4 was pre-installed. I even ditched Acrobat 5 and reinstalled and still no go.

Turn off the optimize for fast view and the embedd thumbnails in the job
options. This worked for someone else.

There is some log file to which Distiller 7 constantly writes. This
causes the log file to grow uncontrollably. I hear. My copy of Tiger
is still sitting on the desk.

Well, here's the thing though. Most of the work I do is submitted electronically for print and the company has specific settings we have to use. In fact, the company emailed each of the designers that do these books and asked up to place the settings file they supplied us with in the distiller settings folder. So they're settings I didn't even set up or touch in any way. I'm afraid if I go in and change anything, that it could disturb the settings file they supplied us with and mess things up for when they print the files I give them.

Turning the stuff off that Mark mentioned won't affect the settings the printer is interested in. BTW - these settings are found in the General tab. You should also turn off "Object-Level Compression", which is usuaaly set to "Tags Only" by default. These features use PDFLib which is a process that runs after a file is distilled. It won't affect the "print-ability" of your PDF.
