distilling exported pdfs
Hi all, I am having real trouble dropping my exported .eps files from IndesignCS2 into Acrobat Distiller 7.0, it simply will not make a pdf for me. I know i could just export a pdf out of Indesign but I can't do that for reasons I won't go into here. It has to be an .eps or nothing.
Help me!

Re: distilling exported pdfs
If you can't direct export a PDF, here are two better alternatives:
(1) In the Print dialog box, choose PostScript as the Printer. Choose Adobe PDF 7 as the PPD. Then process the resulting PostScript (NOT EPS) file through Distiller.
(2) Even faster: Print to the Adobe PDF printer installed with Acrobat 7. This is actually using Distiller, and gives you access to the same settings files.

Why not? I think you would get better responses if you did. It can't be that embarrassing, can it?
It has to be an .eps or nothing.
Do the suggestions made by Steve Werner conflict in any way with that requirement ?

Re: distilling exported pdfs
Thank you for your advice, I usually create my PDFs using Postscripts but for this project it HAD to be an EPS, we are going to have to write a script to deal with the problem we think. Thanks for your input though, the Adobe PDF printer will come in handy one day i'm sure.

Re: distilling exported pdfs
I would bet they are placing the files in Quark

In which case the EPS would be a far better bet.

Re: distilling exported pdfs

What does this mean? Do you get an error message in Distiller, or in Acrobat when you try to view the PDF, or ??? What Distiller settings are you using?
Also, you say you are using Distiller 7.0. The current version is 7.0.8. Are you up to date?
Another thing to try is to drag the EPS file to Mac OS X Preview.app. Does it preview the file? If so, then something is wrong with Distiller or the settings you are using.

You do realize that EPS files are not really supposed to be used this
way, don't you? If you want to distill and spend time with a two step
process then you should creating a postscript file to distill, not an
EPS file.

Bob,
I have seen this point made before, but have not known what to make of it. I have distilled many an eps and have not had any problems with them. Can you please explain?
Thanks,

Re: distilling exported pdfs
If these are for Quark why not just export PDFX/1-a and place that.

As I understand it, when a PDF is placed in QuarkXPress (possibly not the case in XPress 7?), the PDF is internally converted to an EPS. It seems to me that cutting out the middle man is a good thing in this case - if it is for placement in QuarkXPress (which nobody really said it was), then I agree with Bob's earlier suggestion. An EPS is probably better.
