    Default Distilling InDesign-Generated PostScript

I created Postscript from InDesign using the Adobe PDF PPD. I
selected "Download complete" and "Download PPD fonts", and Distiller
failed with the following PostScript error log:

When I turned *off* "Download PPD Fonts", it distilled fine. The only
thing in the error log that means anything to me is "Mathworks", the
manufacturer of MatLab software--using which I generated a number of
EPSs placed in the InDesign document.

Any thoughts about what this means?

I'd post this in the Windows Acrobat forum.

It's clearly an error related to fonts. It may be something that MathLab is doing with the fonts in the EPS file.

Try typing this into Notepad and distilling it. (That is, save the
file as *.PS and then use File > Open in Distiller). Does it work? If
    not, what is the error?

Maybe messed up fonts on your system. This test will say whether
Times-Roman is causing the problem, or whether that's just a
    coincidence.

This what I get in the Distiller log:

Start Time: Monday, April 12, 2004 at 12:36 PM
    Source: test.ps
    Destination: C:\Documents and Settings\mnitabach\Desktop\test.pdf
    Adobe PDF Settings: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
    \Adobe PDF 6.0\Settings\High Quality.joboptions
%%[ Warning: Times-Roman not found, using Font Substitution. Font
    cannot be embedded.]%%
    Distill Time: 0 seconds (00:00:00)
    **** End of Job ****

The PDF that was created has the words "A test" in the middle left of
the page, and the fonts listing reads:

    Times-Roman
    Type: Type 1
    Encoding: Ansi
    Actual Font: TimesNewRomanPSMT
    Actual Font Type: TrueType

Ok, that's much as expected and shows your Times-Roman is not of
itself broken. Moving to the next piece of evidence, do you have a
font called MathWorks on the page? Or anything else related to
    anything called MathWorks?

There is no font called Mathworks on the page. There are a number of
EPSs generated directly from a program called "Matlab", which is
manufactured by the company "Mathworks". I'll try distilling one of
these EPSs directly and see what happens.

What is the significance of the fact that the PostScript distills fine
if I set InDesign to *not* send PPD fonts to the PostScript stream, and
only fails when InDesign *does* send PPD fonts?

This seems to have been a red herring, as the EPSs themselves distill
just fine, and do not contain any Times-Roman font. In fact, there is
no Times-Roman in the InDesign document according to InDesign, nor is
there any Times-Roman in the PDFs that I can create either by exporting
from InDesign or distilling PostScript generated by turning off "Send
    PPD fonts".
