Distribute index on a web site
My client wants to provide a searchable collection of back issues of a newsletter on a web site.
I know Acrobat can't search the contents of PDFs on a web site, but I'm wondering if we can distribute an index so users could download only the index and use that to identify the PDF file(s) containing the searched-for text. Then a user could download or view only the desired issue(s) instead of having to download all of them.
Can an index be used in this way? How?
How would we make an index available for downloading?
If a directory (folder) on a web site is mounted as a Network Place in Windows or using Connect to Server in OS X, can Acrobat then use the index and search the contents of the PDFs?
Other suggestions?
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Distribute index on a web site
This really sounds more trouble than it's worth. Why not just use
Google?

Re: Distribute index on a web site
Thanks, Aandi.
I'm all for minimizing hassle. This needs to search within PDFs on a particular site.
Would this be "Create Custom Search Engine" from this page?
<http://www.google.com/services/search.html#utm_medium=et&utm_source=bizsols&utm_c ampaign=web_site_searchE>
Other?
Also, though rare, some user might be away from the office without Internet access and want to identify a particular issue to download later, so my thought was he or she could use the index for that.

Re: Distribute index on a web site
Google change things around, but that sounds like it.
If you want an offline solution, it is best to avoid the web
completely and just give people the files/index.

Re: Distribute index on a web site
Thanks, Aandi.
I'm hoping to create the most convenient resource for the client's members, recognizing that the index requires udpating after every new issue and that while the majority may be, not everyone is on line 24/7.
It sounds like Catalog/Index has only limited usefulness.
