Documents open as "untitled"

    Default Documents open as "untitled"

I recently reinstalled ID2.02 after a computer failure. After copying backed up files from backup Mac, I found that all of my ID 2.02 documents open as "untitled". This occurs even after renaming and saving them. I have reinstalled ID 2 several times and used downloaded updates up to v. 2.02.

Also, ID seems to have trouble opening docs with the "open" dialogue box (it sometimes tends to hang for a while before activating the "open" button. They open more easily directly from finder, but are still untitled.

    Ideas?

    Are you using OSX?

If so it could be a permissions problem. Check that you have read &
    write privileges.

I'm using OSx v.10.4.8. Permissions are fine. It's as if the "open" command is stuck on open "copy" rather than "normal". The "normal" button is selected in the "open" dialogue box.

Could also be a problem with the ID preferences.

But before you trash them you could first try creating a new user
account and see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't then it's most
    likely not preference-related.

Tried creating a new account but problem remains. Which particular file(s) do I trash, and where do I find them?

If that didn't solve the problem I'm pretty sure it's *not* a prefs
    issue.

Anyway, the prefs are located here:

    /Users/(your name)/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist

Quit ID and move the file 'com.adobe.InDesign.plist' to the desktop,
restart ID. If it doesn't help you can safely put the prefs back since
it's always a hassle to adjust them to one's liking.

    Where are the files located?
You could try moving them to an external drive.
Do you have another Mac you could try opening them on?

Sorry, can't think of anything else at the moment.

That didn't do it either. Same problem with files stored on other drives. Thank you for trying, Martin.

No worries, I know how frustrating it is when things like this happen.

You say you reinstalled ID2 after a computer failure.
Did ID2 work fine before under 10.4.8 or did you by any chance just
upgrade to 10.4.8 after the failure?

I'm not familiar with Mac Backup since I use Retrospect.
Whenever I retrieve files from a backup, Retrospect restores them and
*locks* them. Select one of your documents and do a 'get info' - is the
    'locked' check box ticked?

If you create a *new* ID document and save that, does that open as
'untitled', too, when you reopen it?

As a last resort: I have run into a few mysterious problems in the past
with Adobe- and other applications not behaving and in some cases I was
able to resolve those by reapplying the latest *Combo Updater*.

I'm not saying that this will help in your case, but it can't hurt.

When I backed up I simply copied files directly from my main Mac to a second one. I just copied those back to the main one once it was repaired. No, the files aren't locked. I just tried making a new document, saved it and it retained its name when reopened! Am I going to Have to make cut and paste copies of all my files?

I think that pretty much rules out ID2 and the system as the culprit.

Try selecting any of the stubborn files and do a 'get info'.
Does it state that you can 'read and write' in the info window?

Files are all set for read and write for all users. They are not locked and appear normal. I'm sort of mystified.

    So am I.

Short of anything else to suggest, you're welcome to send me a sample
file to voyager @ isl dot is

I'm on ID CS1, but I'd be happy to take a look.
