uses real vectors and not psuedo-vectors as in PS. So you just let a
vector act as a mask. (I am not trying to start a PS/Fireworks war here.
PS is great but vectors IS the strong-point of Fireworks).

Photoshop uses authentic Postscript vector paths. It sounds to me like
you're confusing the nature of purely raster-based alpha channel masks and
vector-generated selections (Photoshop does both).
I copy/paste vectors from Illustrator and Freehand into Photoshop all the
time for use in generating selections from the paths pallette or in vector
shape layers. I generate work paths from color range selections and other
stuff to often deliver better autotracing results than what I get in using
Streamline or tracing tools found in other draw programs.
The limits in Photoshop regarding vectors lie in its simple/limited toolset.
But Photoshop really doesn't need any more in a vector toolset than it
already has. There is no such thing as a single graphics app that "does it
all." And Fireworks certainly does not qualify as an app that achieves it
either.
I know Fireworks has its fans, but it does not pack the photo editing punch
of Photoshop and it is not a substitution for a full featured vector drawing
program. The main thing I use Fireworks for is optimizing JPEG images.
