    lark,

    Drop shadows: Filter>Stylize>Drop shadows,
Emboss: Filter>Sketch>Stamp or something else which may suit you.

So you may go on a Filter tour (you may also find something useful in Effects).

Jens, should we not bid a Photoshopper welcome as Illustrator?

To RTFM is one thing, but to UNDERSTAND it is something quite different, and you may have to work with things for a while before really you get into it.

So lark, ask any time, but as you can see from the 3rd post you are more likely to get an answer from Timothy; he knows a lot more, and he is up hours before I am.
