Double-sided document WITHOUT facing pages?

Default Double-sided document WITHOUT facing pages?

In PM in the document setup, one could setup a document as a double-sided
document (and set inner and outer margins rather than right and left and
have right and left master pages) without having to view the document on
screen as facing pages. This doesn't seem possible in ID -- or have I missed
something? In ID I find that if I set up a document as facing pages I can
set inner and outer margins and have different right & left master pages,
but I must then work on the document with facing pages on screen. If I
change it and no longer select facing pages, then I am forced back to right
and left margins and the right hand master page disappears. Is there any way
    around this?

    Thanks.

Out of interest Cyndee, why do you want to work on spreads with only one
    page visible?

Because they really aren't spreads, and the view of both pages together is
awkward, but pages that have to be printed with proper margins and right or
left page numbering. Each page has no relation to the next other than they
are set up to be printed next to each other.

Interesting. My feet are a pair, but they have no relation with one another
(my wife tells me when we're dancing). But I wouldn't buy a shoe for one
without treating the other as well (it would be seriously put out).

I suppose your options would be either to reduce your window to portrait so
that when you viewed fit in window you could squeeze the other one out. Or
you could put two empty pages in the middle of each spread so there was
always a blank page facing the one you were working on. Page numbers would
be wrong but would be put right when you removed the blanks.

Neither of those solutions will work -- the main reason I want to see only
one page (the reason that seeing facing is cumbersome) is that I am copy and
pasting pages from individual (single sided) documents into this document to
complete an advertising magazine (each page is a page of ads) -- with facing
pages, I cannot use the power paste (or paste in place, whatever ID calls
it), because going from a single sided to a double sided document, it pastes
the copy into the middle of the spread, so each time I have to reposition
    the copy.

Ah. I have a vague recollection of a script or at least some mention of a
way of pasting to the same position, but I don't know whether that works
between single and double-sided pages. Perhaps someone with more wisdom can
    advise.

Occasionally, I have to do something similar (I produce pages with full bleed that are spiral bound, so we need facing pages, but not spreads). Turn on "Allow Pages to Shuffle" in your Pages pallete flyout menu. Add pages until you have as many as your document needs (they will come in as spreads, but the next step will fix that). Select the spreads you need to separate, then select "Keep Spreads Together" in the Pages pallete flyout menu. Brackets will appear around the page numbers beneath the page icons. Then, individually select only the right page of each spread that you want to separate in the Pages pallete. Drag slightly to the right until the cursor changes to a double ended arrow and a long vertical line appears on the right side of the page icon. Release, and a new right-hand page will appear below the old spread, which is now a single left-hand page. Repeat for each spread.

As far as pasting, if you're pasting from single pages that are the same size as your document pages, you can paste in place, then add (if pasting to the right page) or subtract (if pasting to the left page) HALF the width of the page from the X coordinate in the Transform (or Control) pallete. InDesign will consider the center point of a single page to be the same point as the center of a spread (the gutter). Adding or subtracting half the page width should get it in the same place.

Thanks Greg. I have printed this out to refer to for the next issue. It
still seems like a lot of extra work (there are between 64-80 pages per
issue to separate and paste to) for something that was so simple and
    straightforward in PM.
