There is no installer. You just put the files where you want
them to be. If you wanted to keep them in $HOME/j2rel.4.2_01,
you could just add $HOME/j2rel.4.2_01/bin to your path
and happily run javac, java, etc.

I personally would do something like this:

    cd
    mv j2rel.4.2_01 /usr/local/java2-1.4.2_01
    cd /usr/local
    ln -s java2-1.4.2_01 java2
    chown -hR bin:bin java2 java2-1.4.2_01

Then add /usr/local/java2/bin to your $PATH, and you should be done.

    Thanks logan:

what about the file "/usr/bin/java"? and other java library files? seem to me,
gcc 3.3.1 also uses java libraries ...

also besides the version of java came withn the OS, also netscape from SUN also
came with only java libraries ...

    kinda confusing ...

Standard practice is to move it to /usr and create a symlink from
    there to /usr/java:

    mv j2re1.4.2_01 /usr
    ln -s /usr/j2re1.4.2_01 /usr/java

Note that you should unpack Java distributions as root to preserve
uid, gid, and permissions. Once that's done you'll probably want
symlinks to a directory in your $PATH:

    ln -s /usr/java/bin/java /usr/local/bin/java
    ln -s /usr/java/bin/javac /usr/local/bin/javac
    ln -s /usr/java/bin/jar /usr/local/bin/jar
    ...
