    Default dpi 96 or 72?

without getting into too many technical stuff is there any reason to use
96dpi for web graphics?! does anyone?

No. Browsers display one pixel on the screen for one pixel in the image.

There is no sence to think of resolution for Web images at all. Just forget
about it. It doesn't affect anything on screen at all. Besides, in GIF files
    resolution just doesn't exist.

I agree with the previous 2 posts - just stick with 72dpi.

Screen do not use DPI. DPI is dots per inch used in ink jet Printing.
Screen use pixels to displays images, aka PPI (pixels per inch).

old Displays, mostly CRT displays, tended to be at 72 Pixels per inch (PPI).
Modern displays, mostly LCD displays, tend to have higher pixel densities. 96 PPI, or even 107 PPI.

If you chose to use 96 or 107, and the image contains very small text, the image and or text may be harder to read on an old 72 PPI CRT display.
another thing to be ware of, is that by using 96 or 107 PPI your images files will be larger and in turn will take longer to download.
