Drag image from Safari to desktop, then from desktop to AI.

I used to be able to drag images onto the artboard from my browser. I CAN drag images into illustrator from the desktop thus opening them in their own file, then copy and paste them into the file I need them to be in but that's about 5 steps too many.
If I try it now I get a message on the artboard that says: Quicktime™ and a tiff (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture.
It's interesting that I can open them the way Gary suggests but I can't just drag them in from my browser like the olden days. The message implies that AI is incapable of viewing the image without quicktime(which I have of coarse), but it is in fact capable.
My work around has been to copy the image from my browser, paste it into photoshop then copy from photoshop and paste into illustrator.

I thought Gary meant you can drag from the desktop into the AI document window which does not work.

BTW I believe Rick Johnson has reported this a a bug and is also hope for it to be corrected.

Logic tells me that Illustrator would never (nor should) be able to open an image directly from your browser. While the image is viewed in Safari, you are looking at what the browser has accessed on some remote server through the internet. The file resides on the server. Illustrator can access files over a server, naturally, and could access these image files, too ...if you could mount the server in your local operating system. Illustrator can't work through a browser intermediary.

I drag the image to the desktop, which downloads a copy of the actual image. Then drag that file onto the Illustrator icon in the dock. Select it and copy. Switch to my target document and paste. This is fairly painless to me. Dragging from the desktop directly onto the artboard of an open document would be nice, but Illustrator has never done that. Photoshop doesn't do it either - but InDesign and GoLive do.

Actually, I've always been able to drag an image directly from Internet Explorer into AI 8. And I can drag an image directly from Safari into Photoshop CS, so I'm going with the "It's a bug" theory.

Now; if an image (bitmap or vector) is sitting in the Finder in the form of a clipping, it can be dragged directly into CS. But unlike in OS 9/AI 8, copying and pasting an AI clipping into CS doesn't work properly -- doing this adds points to non straight line objects, as well as a bounding square. (If you haven't noticed this behavior, try this: Draw a circle in CS... drag it to the Desktop to create a clipping... open the clipping... copy... go back to CS and paste. It should look awful.) Was this the case in AI 10 as well? I'm thinking this has to be a bug.

Well, I stand corrected. Logic might tell me something, but actual testing is more reliable.

I can't drag an image directly from any browser onto any program's application icon. If I have an existing document open, though, I can drag an image directly

    FROM.................................TO........... ...............................BUT NOT

    Netscape 4.7.....................AICS, AI 10, PS.................. AI8, ID
IE........................................ AICS, AI 10, AI8, PS.......... ID
    Safari..................................PS, ID....................................Any AI

A bug? Maybe. But Ilustrator's, or the browser's?

Bob - I tried your clipping test. I got the same results as you, but I think it's because when you open the clipping, the Finder's clipping reader doesn't understand bezier curves, so it converts them to straight line segments. Instead of copy/paste, drag the clipping directly from the desktop into an open AI window.

It has been this way only on OSX. In OS9 using AI8 or 9 I could have an artboard open and surf the net dragging images into it creating pages of jpegs very quickly, it even worked with gifs. It's great for research.
I think it's an OSX thing. I was hoping it would be fixed in CS. CS is great though, I love it. This is the only problem that really slows me down. This and having to export legacy files.

I am thinking they fix the legacy thing!

But it would be nice if Apple fix the problem with Safari as I am thinking it is a security or permissions problem. And it would be nice to be able to drag an image file from the desktop to an opened document!

Rick Johnson has chimed in on this a couple of times already! I wonder where he is this has been a pet peeve of his!

Huge productivity hurdle for me too. As an illustrator, I would often drag, directly from a browser, images onto an open Illustrator file. It was a great and quick way to assemble a bunch of reference photos to work from. The multiple steps you have to go through now just seems such a huge step backward in CS.
