Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
I just recently bought a copy of Dreamweaver 8 and come to find out the server
im going to be working on is frontpage based for whatever reason and i can't
seem to find an extension for Dreamweaver 8 anywhere to be able to transfer the
frontpage to the dreamweaver program. Ive tried the couple in the exchange
area for MX and 2004 but neither of those work. Can anyone help me with this
problem?

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
Just because a server you are using is Front Page extension enabled is no
reason you have to use them. The host's control panel should have an option
to disable them.
Then create a DW site definition and import the remote to your computer, if
you don't have a local copy.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
Well the server is set up to be entirely frontpage enabled and nothing else and
the server belongs and is run by a university so i don't have direct access to
the mainframe nor do i have the authority to change any of it so i kind of need
another option aside from that one. Thanks for your input though. Anyone else
have any ideas?

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
It doesn't really matter. Front Page extensions are so you can use them
with front page rather than learn a server side technology. You can easily
create a site definition in Dreamweaver and ftp the pages to the server and
they will still work. The only thing that doesn't work is if you already
have something coded with Front page webbots (if they still even use those)
... if you don't need something that requires the extensions, having them on
the server won't really hurt anything.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
So if the extension isn't required then any of the remote contacts for the site
definition should work you just need the proper items to be able to fill them
out? I'm not sure about FTP though cause you need a username and password and
im not sure how to go about getting that information.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
And that information isn't available to you? That could be .. I haven't set
up a Front Page web since version 98. Yes .. you would need the FTP address
or IP and the user name and password. The rest is for Front Page to
communicate with Front Page .. other than the webbots which are Front page's
replacement for server side scripting. They work (or did in version 98) but
are somewhat limiting.
This is all going away soon anyway .. Microsoft has dropped support for
Front Page.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
Of course this very much depends on your workplace not disabling FTP access to
the server, which is what mine does. They require (and support) frontpage only.
I just use Dreamweaver because it is better.
I don't imagine it would take anyone much time to update the extension to work
with dreamweaver 8.

Re: Dreamweaver 8 Frontpage server extension
The school i am located in will not give me an a username and password for ftp
usage because it sets a principle. I guess what im asking is i need someway
for dreamweaver to have a frontpage extension so when i go to update it the
server thinks its coming from frontpage and not dreamweaver. FTP is fully out
of the question so i need a frontpage extension of some kind.

I doubt there is a workaround using DW extensions, but I could be wrong.
Install FrontPage and have it do the file transfers for you after you build
your site locally. FP may add some of it's own support files, but they
should not cause a problem - hopefully.
