    macintosh?

first- when you say you set up a "favorite places", i'm not familar with
    that term.

have you set a default image folder in that site definition?

    Also---
Is there any other strangeness going on? Is the Assets panel empty? Are
you nagged to recreate the site cache every 5 minutes?

    to check a possible-
Please open a new document using File-->New
    -->Don't Save It<--

Insert an image that's from inside that site's Local Site Folder.
In code view- pls copy the <img tag, with the full hard drive path to the
image. I'm looking for funky characters in the HD name, or the folder names
    down to your site folder.

If you don't have a site defined in dreamweaver and aren't working "within"
    a site- then that's a different problem.

The standard Mac file dialog was modified at some point to show a drop-down
list of "Favorites" so that you can jump immediately to any folder you have
added to the list. Not all programs use it since they had to be modified to
make use of this feature. (Apple incorporated a feature that was originally
part of a 3rd-party system enhancement. It was first called "Boomarang" and
    then "Action Menus", I believe.)

It works here except I have found that file dialogs will default to the root
of the hard drive if I have altered the directory structure leading to the
location where a file was opened in a previous session with a program.

It sounds like you are working from a server rather than from your local
hard drive. DW doesn't officially support this configuration, although some
do work this way. Try moving your site to your local drive and see if that
    helps.
