Transparent PSD with a 30% black drop shadow set to multiply. Place that
over a 100% yellow background in ID and the result should be 35% black
and 100% yellow if the multiply blend mode was honored.

Surely, multiply is channel by channel, so the result should be 30% black (+100Y), shouldn't it?

just did a brochure and all my PSD's with drop shadows placed in ID fine?

As added detail: your default Photoshop black you use for shadows is not pure black but happens in all channels. That makes the loss of multiply less noticeable.

    Ah, thanks Bob.
"Certain" knowledge has crumbled so often in the last 15 years that I always deem it possible to be wrong about something ;)

Thanks for your feedback on shadows. I will try for a few colour proofs from my printers as a trial.
