    Default Drop Shadow Default

Using InDesign CS under Windows 2000

I try to set a 'default' drop shadow (like in Illustrator) by having NO object selected, I go into the Drop Shadow Dialog box and fill out my preferences. I then select something - which happens to be a text box, select Drop Shadow and my default preferences are NOT there. I tried creating the text box after I set the defaults and that didn't work either.

Does the default only apply to items that are DRAWN - and not TEXT fields? If so, this seems like an oversight.....

Any other suggestions on how to accomplish this if it is an oversight? Scripting?

    Thanks

I think this is an anomoly that has been noted here before. You can apply a
default drop shadow to objects but not to text.

A workaround is to apply your required drop shadow to a piece of text and
put it in a library. Then when you want drop shadowed text, drag it out of
the library and change the text. Might be marginally easier and more
intuitive than re-applying drop shadow definitions.

As to whether this can be achieved with scripting, those with binary between
the ears may want to step in.

Thanks - I had done a search "drop shadow" but only found the thread on problems with EPS images.

And thanks for the tip on using the library - but the font, point size, etc. all change regularly so I'd have to change all those each time - I guess a trade-off between setting the options in the Drop Shadow Box each time.

I found a script that sets a Drop Shadow in the Adobe Service Provider area but it's only for the MAC. I don't know how to write scripts yet but plan to learn. If anyone out there can whip one up - I'm sure there are lots of users who could use this feature....

    Thanks

You'd need to have the text frame selected using the selection tool. You
can't have the text itself selected.

Thanks - but I've tried that with both selection tools and still, no defaults appear when I select Drop Shadow. Am I missing something?
