Maybe I have more luck asking here...

I have an old japanese Unix workstation running something
called SEIUX. That's mostly a clone of some version of
MIPS RISC/os and as such it is a dual universes system.
It's basically SVR3, but can be made to behave like 4.3BSD.
This "feature" is quite problematic. I'm trying to get
some GNU software on this beast. So far, I could compile
gcc-2.7.2.3 in SVR3 mode, but other things are quite
difficult. Many things can be solved by including a
few BSD header files and linking with libbsd. The question
is now whether compiling on top of the BSD universes
might be better.
Is there anybody here who can say something about dual
universe Unix systems? Can I compile things in one
universe and expect everything to work in the other too?
Would compiling gcc in the BSD world give me a "different"
gcc than compiling in the SVR3 environment?
I could imagine that some softwrae would compile in SVR3,
but not in BSD or vice versa. Can I just mix the compile
universes just as I need or will I break the rest?
I admit that this is pretty old stuff, but maybe some
people still remember.
