If indeed it's just page 72 that gives the problem, I'm betting that the simple Illustrator eps isn't so simple after all.
Did you save it as a recent Illustrator eps, or as a Illustrator 8 or earlier?
Although it might compromise on the quality of the pdf, but what if you save the eps as a tiff and use that instead?
