duplicate layer to new doent - Adobe Illustrator Windows

How do I duplicate a layer to a new doent without copying the artwork which is tedious when sublayers are involved? The Layers Pallete menu has a Duplicate Layer, but doesn't allow you to specify a doent (unlike Photoshop). Thanks!...

    David,

Alt-clicking on a layer in the layers palette will select everything in that layer. Does that help?

    Harron,

I don't think so, but thanks. Suppose you have a drawing with "Layer1" and sublayers A, B, C. And you have another drawing with "Layer2" and sublayers D, E, F. What is the best/easiest way to combine those two drawings so that you end up with a drawing with 2 layers: Layer1 (with sublayers A,B,C) and Layer2 (with sublayers D,E,F)?

    Thanks--Dave

    David,

    In AI 10...

    1. Alt-click on Layer 1 in the layers palette of drawing 1.

    2. Hit Ctrl+C to copy to clipboard.

    3. Open drawing 2, containing Layer 2 with sublayers.

    4. With 'paste remembers layers' on, hit Ctrl+V to paste Layer 1 with its sublayers into drawing 2.

Note that you will run into problems with this method if you're working with identically named main layers in both drawings. (Identically named sublayers should be OK.)
