From the HP web site download the two drivers (actually driver and OS
    9 updater).

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you perform the installation the RIGHT way
or it will not work. The HP instructions are not clear.

First, remove all parts of the existing drivers and any old ones, even
the newly installed driver from the extensions folder.

Move those extensions into a folder that does not boot.

Restart the system at this point to clear the drivers from the system
    registries.

    Unstuff the 600 series driver.

Restart with all extensions turned off by holding down the appropriate
keys or use the Extentions manager.

Perform the installation of the 600 series driver (run the installer).

Restart the system with your extensions back on.

DO NOT - UNDER ANY CIRSTANCES - access the CHOOSER at this point.
The installer or system will tell you that you have installed a new
printer and to select it in the chooser. DO NOT DO THIS.

If the driver is selected in the chooser the updater will not work.

Now unstuff the updater and run that.

Restart once again, and you should have a working 600 series driver
    under OS 9.

Note that the installer for the drivers interact with the operating
system in some manner. This is why you cannot install this on say a
system with OS 8 and then simply copy the extensions over. That will
not work. Gettinga copy from someone on the net may not work either
    because of this.

You must install the driver, leave it alone (do not choose it) then
run the updater before it is ever selected.

If you follow this procedure carefully it should work.

HP says nothing about this at their web site. I had to carefully
follow the instructions several times before I understood them and got
    the driver installed and working.

NOTE:- I will tell you that there is a bug in the driver.

If you use the 600 series serial printer and access the Apple SYSTEM
PROFILER the printer will receive an AppleTalk signal and move 1/2 a
page of paper. The same thing happens to me when I launch Mozilla 1.1
and/or Netscape 7 (Gecko) on my OS 9.2.1 system (G3 beige desktop).
HP is not going to fix this because the printer and driver are
considered obsolete. What I find works is leaving the printer turned
off and not turn it on until ready to print from Netscape or Mozilla
    if you use them.
