Dynamic and Static IP
I was wondering if you can have dynamic and static IP addresses on the same
network. The network will include PCs with Win98, W2K, and XP operating
systems. So far I was able to set up a network with Static IP addresses but
was not able to bring in a PC with a Dynamic IP address. The only time I was
able to use a Dynamic IP address was with a XP machine. The PC was set with
a Dynamic IP and I would also have to use the Aleternative Configuration
which was set with a static IP address.
Thanks,
J

Re: Dynamic and Static IP
I use a combination of static and dynamic addressing my home LAN. In my case I assign static IP
addresses in the 192.168.0.10 to .20 range versus the high end which the XP ICS DHCP server tends to
use when assigning dynamic IPs. My fixed hosts and nodes, ie. desktops, wireless access point, etc
get static IP addresses. Wireless devices and wired guest devices, ie. PocketPCs and laptops, get
DHCP assigned IP addresses. I use XP ICS to assign dynamic addresses and to share my 56K dial ISP.
I read a comment in this forum by someone the other day, Ron Lowe I believe it was, stating the XP
ICS can track the static IPs and subsequently knows to assign dynamic addresses that do not
conflict.
