    I created a dynamic select tag using information I pulled from an Access
    database. What I want to know is how you set the first item in the drop down
    menu as the selected item or is it even possible. The altimate goal is to use
    the first selected item as the data for a second query.

    Thanks,

    I'm not sure I understand your question. If your query returns one item and
    you want it to appear as the first item in a dropdown list, the code below will
    do the job. If that's not what you want, could you clarify a bit?

    <CFQUERY NAME="myQuery" ...>
    SELECT lastName WHERE ID = 123456
    </CFQUERY>

    <SELECT NAME="mySelect>
    <OPTION VALUE="#myQuery.lastName#">#myQuery.lastName#
    <OPTION VALUE=...>
    </SELECT>

    Hey rental08,

    <SELECT NAME="mySelect>
    <CFOUTPUT query="MyQuery">
    <OPTION VALUE="#lastName#" <CFIF currentrow is 1>SELECTED</cfif>>#lastName#
    </CFOUTPUT>
    </SELECT>
