I'm getting the same message using Acrobat 5 under OS X.
There was no problem before when I used MS-Entourage or Apple's Mail client, but now I'm using Thunderbird as my email client along with the same version of Acrobat.

Thunderbird isn't an program that can be used by Acrobat. Neither is my
prefered email program, Mailsmith.

To set your preferred email application ...
Open mail.app, preferences, general, and set your default email reader:
