In the Properties Inspector, check to see what your edge is set to (Hard,
Anti-alias or Feather). Sounds like it's set to Hard. Also check the type of
stroke you are using. If you have a hard line set for the stroke, then
    change it.

One issue is probably the bevelling. Notice in your "dream image" there are
no bevels. Same with glows. Around fine details like this, bevels and glows
only serve to make things look either fuzzy (glow) or rough (bevel). Bevels
need some substance within the object to do a decent job. If you want the
feel of a bevel with a thin line, create two more circles, one that fits
just inside your main circle, and one that wraps aroudn the outside. Adjust
the colors so that you get decent contrast (light, dark, light or dark,
light, dark) and see how that goes.

The other thing that would help would be to use gradients for your circles,
rather than solid color. With some practice, you can customize a gradient so
    that an object looks metallic.

I made some alterations to your PNG and uploaded it here:

www.nms123.ca/test/shield.png. I don't have the color right for the inner
circle, but I hope this gives you an idea.I also adjusted your stroke
sizes - made them thinner, mostly, and darker.

Yes very helpful, I have started to get it closer to the look I am going
for. Here a smaller version of the original. Have not figured out a good way
to make the bolt/rivet effect yet.

That's progress! I am still a little concerned about the glow around the
text, in terms of legibility, but you're definitely getting closer.

For the bolt, try using the polygon shape tool to draw a hexagon, then put
an outer bevel on it. At the size you'll be using them, the outer bevel may
not do much. In which case, maybe a shadow.
