I love the glyphs, but how do I convert them to something I can color & resize?

    Carl,

A glyph is simply a character in a font. Once the glyph is on your artboard, you can scale and apply fills, strokes, colors, etc., just like any other text. To convert text to outlines, select it and press Ctrl+Shift+O.
