editable region end tag stripped away

Default editable region end tag stripped away

When my Contribute 3 publishers edit a template-based webpage then publish it,
the editable region <end tag> is stripped. As a result, the editable region
becomes uneditable and locks out. The pages are even locked out when using
Dreamweaver MX 2004 in the design mode (code mode is still accessible). All of
the latest updaters have been installed on both Contribute 3 and Dreamweaver.
What is the solution to this problem? I really can't believe that this
software was release with such a major problem. HELP! :disgust;

I can't either. In fact, I'm sure it was not.

Show me the code on the page, please.

hi - thanks for responding so quickly. here's a test page where i recreated
the problem.
http://www2.outreach.csulb.edu/Housing/index.htm

(see the <datesaved> tag? that's where C3 stripped the <instanceend> tag and
also removed a <div> tag)

really weird. i appreciate any feedback that you can provide.

Also, you are declaring XHTML for that page, but you are not using XHTML
tags - why is that?

here is the good page.

XHTML tags... well... i'm not quite there yet. Things were working fine with
Contribute 2 using the same template structure.

Right - well, the problem is that DW is looking a page filled with invalid
code under the current circumstances. I'm not surprised that it is deleting
things to try to fix that.

Who coded these pages?

(sigh) The same template worked fine with Contribute 2. Does anybody else have any ideas? See above thread for url.
Thank you.

This only means that CT2 was more tolerant of improper code. Have you tried
fixing the code?

Hey merrysaddles,

although Murray *TMM*'s reply may not be satisfying he may be correct.

I ran into a very similar problem and maybe my example might help.

We converted our entire web presence to a template/Contribute system end of
last year.

With help from some good coders in IT, we managed to create realy basic html
files from the files that our previous content management system created. Their

Still, I had to go through the entire site, page by page, and apply a template
to each file so I could use Contribute and force users to edit only the parts
of the page I wanted them to edit.

In other words, I was creating editible regions for my users. However, a lot
of the html on these pages was created several years ago. And back then they
were doing things like combining block quotes and unordered lists to get
indents, and different effects.

A lot of the lists would not have ANY closing tags. I found that both
Dreamweaver and then Contribute would choke on these lists and not let the main
content area be editible.

I had to go to these pages and basically delete all the unordered lists and
replace them with paragraph tags when they were just trying to indent.

OR, i had to make sure that all <ul> tags had a corresponding </u> tag and the
same for <li>

If a tag stretches from an uneditible region to an editible region you will
have problems.
