    Default educational version of software

Someone told me that companies like Macromedia are able to detect
when a web page is made with educational versions of the software,
and that they are prosecuting people that are using those versions
    to make commercial sites.

I don't see how they would be able to tell. Is this one of those
    urban legends?

My opinion on this (and often other Adobe products), is that if you're too
cheap or cannot afford the retail version of the product and/or are too
cowardly to abide by the EULA, then you deserve to get caught.

Personally, I feel like people who want Coldfusion MX 7 Enterprise for $5 are
just your everyday child-like "gimme gimme the world on a silver platter- won't
work for a dime, but everything should be mine" kinda people. They're uneasy
about spending anything over $20 for software that took millions to develop,
and would rather break the rules than to pay their respects and purchase the
    software.

And often more than naught, they don't use but 3% of the product's
    capabilities.

Case in point, people who rip of a copy of Flash only to make cheesy
    animations and other web-based nightmares.

But that's just my take on it...
