elementary question
everyone has to start somewhere!
My question is this: When filling in the site definition wizard, I am asked...
'What folder on your server do you want to store your files in.'
I enter the ftp address of my site together with an empty folder that I created on the site to hold my new web site. I checked and re-checked the address.
I get a message which says....
'Cannot display the remote folder: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
Make sure the remote folder is available or choose another one from the edit sites dialogue.'
I am assuming that the remote folder is situated not on my pc but up on the server, and that I should enter my ftp address not my http address.
I appreciate this must be an elementary question for most of you, but I cannot get past this at the moment, the help section covers the remote folder issue but does not tell me how to get around this problem. Would greatly appreciate a pointer please.

I apologize if I'm interpreting the above too literally, but when asked for
the folder, you should just enter the folder and not the complete ftp
address. Also, depending on how the host is set up, your files may go in the
root directory, or a specific sub-folder, like public_html or something
similar. There will be a default location where your pages will be served
from. You can put pages in sub-directories if you wish, but your home page
must be in that specific directory. If you can't figure out what directory
that is, consult your host's FAQ.

Elementary Question
I have a question whose answer is probably obvious...
If I have inherited Illustrator files from another person, and my version is 9 and their version is Illustrator 10, would those files appear white in the directory window and the application listed in the "Kind" column be "document?"
I am assuming that this is the case. I can't open their files.
Please help.

Re: Elementary Question
Unless the Ai10 files are specifically saved for earlier versions, earlier versions may not recognize the files. This is especially true between OS9 and OSX applications. Since Illustrator 9 is an OS9 application only and Illustrator 10 is an OS9 or OSX application, in most cases Illustrator 9 has no clue what an Illustrator 10 file is.
Short answer - yes.

Re: Elementary Question
Thanks very much, Scott, for you answer. I hesitate to upgrade to OS 10 as I've heard of so many problems with it. It's good to know that Illustrator 10 is compatible to OS 9 and 10.
Is Illustrator CS the same as Illustrator 10?

Re: Elementary Question
No. Illustrator CS is the next version, essentially CS = 11.
OS10.3.2 is a solid, usabale system here with the Creative Suite applications. And Illustrator CS (which is OSX only) is the best release of Illustrator since version 8. Version 9 and 10 had issues, some serious in my opinion.

Re: Elementary Question
Short term solution... you can't open Illy 10 eps's in illy 9, but you can place an illy 10 eps into an open Illy 9 file. If the eps does not contain anything 9 can't handle you should have the vector objects as is.
If that does not work, you can distill a PDF from the ver10 eps and then open that pdf in Illy9.
No guarantees, mind you , but it can get you by if you plan to skip Illy10 and are not quite ready to move to OS X and CS.
