Elements and PSP8 - Adobe Photoshop Elements

I have Photoshop Elements 2 that came with the Digital Rebel. There was no manual supplied with Elements and I find it very difficult to navigate the web help system. I am used to Paint Shop Pro 8. Is there a technique or command in Elements that does the same job as ‘Edge preserve smooth’ or ‘JPEG artifact remove’ in PSP8? Sometimes I need to smooth the edges after a USM. Thanks for any help. I hope I am in the right forum with this request! I run Windows 98 (rather old!)...

There are no direct equivalents to those PSP commands
Your best bets are to try
    ---Blur>Smart blur
    ---Distort>Diffuse glow
    ---Noise>Median
    ---Stylize>Diffuse>Ansiotropic

But to do what you really want to do in either Photoshop or Elements, you're
going to have to learn how to do edge masking before you run USM.
(actually, it's a good skill set to have no matter what tool you use)
Here's an excellent tutorial on the process.

It has occurred to me that it is probably a royal pain to do edge masking in
Elements because of the way it handles both masks and channels. (it can be
done, but the effort is completely outof proportion to the payoff) I
apologize. I use both PSP and PS7 on a daily basis, I use Elements less
    frequently.
The first part of the post still stands.
