There something like three dozen different versions of emacs that have been
compiled for Mac OS X; which one are you using? The one that came with Mac OS X,
or did you install some other that you downloaded?

It doesn't have pulldown-type menus, but try this:

    ESC x menu-bar-mode
    ESC ` (that's a backtick)

You probably also want to set the Option key as a Meta key in your
Terminal.app settings (even though the key is in the wrong place and too
    small ;) ).

    Other options:

jed - terminal/console based app. Has a menubar with pulldown menus, though
it doesn't work with the mouse in Terminal.app. This is my everyday editor
for mail/news/admin (though, come to think of it, the standard
/usr/bin/emacs would probably do me just fine). Comes in Fink.

Carbon-enhanced Emacs - GNU Emacs-based. This is the most aqua-friendly
emacs, but it doesn't seem to handle fonts very well (or maybe someone can
tell me how to get a monaco font larger than 14pt.) Command-key is Meta key.

XEmacs - My emacs of choice for programming. Comes in Fink. You'll need to
install X11 from your OS X install discs for this. Command-key is Meta key
(Apple X11 keymapping.) Hint: if xemacs starts with a size too big for the
screen, you'll get a vertical blank white bar across the right side of the
app (quartz-wm bug?). To prevent this, specify a geometry that fits (e.g.
xemacs -g 80x33+200). Another hint: My favorite monospace font for X is
    neep-alt-24 from JMK's X11 fonts:

Also, if you use emacs a lot, you may want to remap your capslock to a
    control key:

Playing around I discovered that you can get 18 and 24 pt courier. 18 pt is OK
looking and 24 pt is gorgeous, though probably too big for most people.

Here's the relevant part of my .emacs (starting with the dot-emacs that
    comes with Carbon emacs)

    (when (and (boundp carbon-emacsp) carbon-emacsp)
;; courier 18 font and 80x35 window dimension
    (setq default-frame-alist '((width . 80)
    (height . 35)
    (font . "*-courier-*-180-*")))
    (setq initial-frame-alist default-frame-alist)
    )
