Embedding Flash newer than v5 in PDFs -QuickTime as preferred multimedia player
I have Reader v8 on my Mac and Acrobat Pro v8 on XP. I can create PDFs with embedded Flash content that play on the Mac providing the Flash content is v5 or less. If I embed Flash newer than v5 (I have Studio 8) it won't play in PDFs on the Mac.
I've done some background checking and it seems the problem with Reader on the Mac is that by default it uses QuickTime to play multimedia. QT can only play v5 Flash so that's why PDFs with newer Flash don't play on the Mac, at least on my Mac.
Is there any way to get Reader 8 on the Mac to use a multimedia player other than QuickTime? In Reader 8 preferences there's no way of specifying anything other than QuickTime as the preferred multimedia player. Is it possible for example to get Reader to use Flash as the preferred player?
Cheers,
David.

In System Preferences/Internet & Network/QuickTime/Advanced make sure the check box for Enable Flash is checked. It is turned off by default.

Hi Larry, yes, I should have said this is already checked. If it wasn't I wouldn't have been able to play Flash v5 content.
Cheers,
David.

Reader 8.0's support for Flash is limited for what QT can support (i.e. Flash v5).

I am amazed that Adobe took over Macromedia and now own Flash. and Acrobat/Reader 8 was built after the takeover That Flash is not built in.
Can any Adobe folks enlighten us as to why this is?

Re: Embedding Flash newer than v5 in PDFs -QuickTime as preferred multimedia player
I'm not an Adobe employee, but I can easily see why it didn't happen for Acrobat 8. The Macromedia merger was only approved about December of 2005, as I recall. At that point (an educated guess, no inside information here), the Acrobat 8 product had been in development for about a year and a quarter, and was pretty solidified and in full engineering development.
The only Macromedia feature that was grafted on in the short timeframe available was the Start Meeting button which led to leads to Acrobat Connect (Flash-based technology for online meetings).
I would imagine that we'll see lots more integration in the other Creative Suite 3 applications that should be not too far around the corner. And in Acrobat 9.
Software development, engineering, quality control, and beta testing for very large products takes much longer than you're allowing for.

Re: Embedding Flash newer than v5 in PDFs -QuickTime as preferred multimedia player
That Means we've just bought 8 out only two three months we can expect to wait another two years or more. IT may be faster on windows platform Because the market and margin is higher but for us another 2 years.
Apple is on the verge of bringing X.5 on the Market 1 came out roughly 2002 so That means a roughly a yearly cycle.
Makes you scratch your head anyway.
Thanks for the comment.
