Default Embedding PDFs causing Font Issues

    Hi,

This is what we do in our newspaper: we create tabloid-size supplements using ID CS multiple page documents. Then we export those pages as a single PDF file, using the Export Function of ID.

Then, manually, we do imposition on a broadsheet page by getting the proper pages from the (exported) PDF file and rotating them accordingly. (Letīs say in a 8-page sup, we create a single ID page containing pages 1 & 8 of the PDF).

We print that single page and itīs OK. We also archive every page by printing them to a Distiller hot folder.

Those new PDF files display OK as well, BUT the problem shows up when we try to use some text from that archived PDF: we select the text in Acrobat Reader, copy it, and place it in WordPad or any text app, and we get this:

(If you canīt see, itīs just square boxes, one per character).

We need this functionality to reuse the articles printed in the newspaper.

The original PDF works fine, but itīs setup at a different size and resolution, and itīs not good for archiving purposes.

It seems like the issue arises with Type 1 (CID) fonts, with Identity-H Codification, whatever that means.

We are using InDesign CS for WINDOWS...

It happens only with the pages created out of PDF files. The original pages create "healthy" PDF files thru the same Distiller queues...

    Any help is appreciated...

I wonder if you are subsetting the fonts when you make the PDF?

    Three ideas:

    (1) See what happens if you create the original PDFs by distilling
    PostScript instead of exporting.

    (2) See what happens if you open the final PDFs in Acrobat instead of
Acrobat Reader and copy the text from there.

    (3) See what happens if you export the text from Acrobat instead
    copy-pasting.

It works fine... not the best solution but it works...

    Same thing, same problem...

I couldnīt find such an option in Acrobat 6.0 Professional...?

    Thanks for the good ideas...

Save as RTF or TXT format.

    (3) See what happens if you export the text from Acrobat instead copy-pasting.

I tried both, RTF & TXT. In RTF I got an error in which Acrobat complains about the codification of the problematic font and says that because of that it canīt create the RTF doc.

TXT: It gets created but it contains mostly blanks..!

I think what he means is via export vs. print.

Either way you do it, it has to use distiller.

Either way you do what has to use Distiller?

Exporting PDF directly from InDesign doesn't involve Distiller.

it doesnt? I thought it did. How about that. It has its own PDF
    distiller thing built in?

How many times do I have to ask you to stop posting misinformation?
Exporting PDFs from ID is done natively.
