Emergency repair disk
Hi all, this may seem a silly question, but can one make
Emergency Repair Disk for Windows 2003 servers.
If I go into the Back it will only do a complete back up
and all I want is a Boot floppy.
You can do it in all the other windows, why has this
changed.
Or am I just missing some thing?

How do I create an ERD (Emergency Rescue Disk) in Windows Server 2003?
You cannot create an ERD in Windows Server 2003. ERD has been replaced
by Automated System Recovery (ASR). To start the ASR wizard, follow these
steps:
a.. Click Start->Run and type ntbackup
b.. Click Advanced Mode
c.. Click the button for Automated System Recovery Wizard
For more information about ASR, take a look at these links:

Emergency repair disk
This should work!
To create an Automated System Recovery set using Backup
Open Backup.
The Backup or Restore Wizard starts by default, unless it
is disabled. You can use the Backup or Restore Wizard to
create an Automated System Recovery (ASR) set by answering
All information on this computer in the What do you want
to backup? section. Otherwise, you can go to the next step
to create an ASR set in Advanced Mode.
Click the Advanced Mode link on the Backup or Restore
Wizard.
On the Tools menu, click ASR Wizard.
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
Important
You will need a blank 1.44 MB floppy disk to save your
system settings and media to contain the backup files. If
your computer does not have a floppy drive, see
Troubleshooting.
Notes
To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the
Administrators or Backup Operators group on the local
computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate
authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members
of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this
procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run
as to perform this procedure.
To start Backup, click Start, point to All Programs, point
to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click
Backup.
This procedure will only back up those system files that
are necessary for starting your system. You will need to
backup your data separately.
After creating the ASR set, label this floppy disk and
backup media carefully and keep them together. To use the
backup media, you must have the floppy disk that you
created with that set of media. You cannot use a floppy
disk created at a different time or with a different set
of media. You must also have your Setup CD available at
the time you perform Automated System Recovery.
Keep the ASR set in a secure location. The ASR set
contains information about your systems configuration that
could be used to do harm to your system.
If you are backing up a server cluster, run the Automated
System Recovery Preparation Wizard on all nodes of the
cluster and make sure that the Cluster service is running
when you start each Automated System Recovery backup. Make
sure that one of the nodes on which you run the Automated
System Recovery Preparation Wizard is listed as the owner
of the quorum resource while the wizard is running

RE: Emergency repair disk
Hello Alan,
No there is no ERD disk in Windows 2003.
Most of that functionality was removed in Windows 2000, you could create a
disk but it only had limited functionality as compared to prior Windows NT
versions.
What functionality are you looking for when using the ERD disk?
As in other posts, ASR is the replacement, there isn't enough space on a
floppy disk to contain what is needed to perform repair functionality.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
