Endnote Import from Word is Killing Me

Default Endnote Import from Word is Killing Me

I have a Word doc with Endnote References (superscript at the end of a sentence). The Endnote Text is at the end of each section of this publication. However, when I place the doc in InDesign all of the Endnote Text dumps to the very end off all of the body copy rather than in its relative location in Word. That really wouldn't be such a big deal...

    EXCEPT

All of the Endnotes and the inline Endote References are getting renumbered in sequence for the whole document rather than as they are assigned per section. So, instead of having various endnote blocks that might be numbered 1-10 or so, the the numbers are ripping throw all of the blocks as if they were one. So, each block of endnotes is beginning following in sequence from the last. This will mean manually editing every freaking inline number as well as every endnote block.

There must be some streamlined way to get this stuff to come in as it should. Is there? This issue will be a major production slowing feature. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. I have scoured this forum and the web in general and have yet to find this issue addressed.

This is not my real area of expertise but you should not that ID CS2
added support for footnotes, but that came with a price and that seems
to be a bit less support for end notes.

I'll let someone more experienced in that type of thing jump in here but
based on the limited experience I've had with this you might need to
either script this or break the Word doc up a bit more.

You need to seperate it into different Word docs and place them seperately. Keep in mind that they will not work like Word endnotes. When you move the reference the numbering in the endnotes will have to be changed manually.

I share your frustration. I don't know if you have CS1, but I import the documents into that and then open the CS1 file in CS2. I hate the extra step but found it the simplest way to deal with endnotes.

I don't understand, how does CS1 handle endnotes differently from CS2?

CS1 treated all footnotes and endnotes the same...as endnotes.

But it seems Jon prefers CS1's way of handling it. Does he want all footnotes to be endnotes? Word has the ability to convert all footnotes to endnotes. I fail to see the advantage of CS1 over CS2 with regards to importing endnotes.
