Default EPS Preview Mac to PC

I've created a simple logo in CS on Windows 2000, saved it as an EPS with 8bit preview. Created the same logo in 8 on Mac, saved it the same way. Imported both logos into a Quark document on the Mac. Why would the PC logo look so bitmapped as compared to the Mac version? I've tried it with Anti-aliased Artwork on and off and still makes no difference.

We're converting from Mac to PC and all new software. I realize Quark 6 has Full Resolution Preview, but this slows the system down significantly and won't recommend this to my users. Doesn't seem like a Quark issue since the same logo looks fine when saved on a Mac in AI version 8.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks! D.

Sounds like you're looking at the difference between a TIFF preview (for the EPS file created in IL Win) vs. a PICT preview (for the EPS file created in IL Mac). They're both low-resolution proxies, but there might be a difference in the way QXP6 Mac renders them on-screen.

In neither case should QXP output to a Postscript device be affected because EPS previews are just that. But if it bugs you, reopen the Win EPS file in IL Mac (assuming version differences don't prevent you from doing that -- might have to export to a legacy version in IL CS Win -- don't know whether you can do that with EPS in CS) and re-save. That'll put the PICT preview in the EPS file.

Might want to do that with all of your placed EPS files anyway if the job is going out from the Mac.

I've tried exporting from AICS on Windows as AI 8 with no luck. Still looks bad in Quark. It's not that these files will be output from a Mac and there's no problem with printing, but just that they look really ugly when imported into Quark. Something we're not used to seeing with Illustrator 8 eps today on the Mac. Must be the Pict to Tiff difference. Thanks, D.

Well... It's roundabout, but you could export as native AI8 (.ai not .eps) out of IL 11 Win. You could open this in IL 8 Mac and save to EPS there with the PICT preview.

Nice try, but once we convert to Windows platform we'll no longer have Macs in easy access. Looks like we might have no choice but to get used to the bitmapped look in Quark. Ick!

    Thanks anyway, D.

You could always switch to InDesign. I find little to no navigation or redraw performance hit in ID when I use the high-quality display option for placed EPS objects. And that's with a lowly 1GHz P3.

    Something to think about.
