Default EPS saved from IDCS2 are corrupt when read back in

I produce magazine pages that are mainly made up of adverts. These files are saved as EPS from IDCS2 using the export option. I am getting a couple of errors with these EPS files when I try to place them back into an IDCS2 page into a picture box.

One error reads - Cannot find a filter for the requested file, the other relates to problems with the preview image.

I have upgraded from CS1 where this was never a problem.

Does anyone have any ideas for a workaround for this..?

Does this happen for every EPS file produced this way or just certain ones?

Have you tried use PDFs as the basis of this process -- it is widely held to be a more reliable format.

Not every EPS is effected, which is the strange thing..

I am also reluctant to bring in PDFs as the final page is PDF'd and have always worked under the impression that this can cause more problems than it solves. especially with printers..

Nested PDFs is less and less of a problem these days (provided you don't go crazy). Definitely less a problem that the EPS format. Did you check the long topic on the subject of EPS files at the top of the forum?

Less experienced printers get that impression because they hang onto old versions of QuarkXPress where that is true. InDesign's handling of placed PDF is exemplary.

I only provide PDFs to my printer/s

I only place PDF files in the documents before making the final Printer PDF.

I have never had a problem.

I do see problems with EPS files in this forum all the time.

Why is this only starting to be a problem with IDCS2. Never had these issues with EPS files and CS1...!?

The first natural suspect is, as always, the fonts. Is there a specific font you can trace it down to? Are you using a font management utility? Auto-activation? If you deactivate all the fonts and export it will it import uncorrupted?

Also, with regards to the preview error are you having InDesign generate the previews for you rather than using the preview stored with the EPS? That resolves on or two a few ID/EPS issues, although they usually are more related to drop shadows.

IMHO, EPS is no better or worse than PDF if it does the job you need it to. And we're still having more trouble with PDFs here then we've had with EPS in the past. PDF promises a lot but has fallen down on execution for us in both ID3 and ID4 (largely with reference to fonts and font subsetting).

    Eric,

There are 3 designers saving ads as EPS files. 2 machines are running Panther (10.3.9) and one Tiger (10.4.7). I have tried subsetting the fonts as well as including the full character set, but to no avail. I have also tried saving the EPS files as both level 2 and 3 postscript, same problem. All machines are running Suitcase Fusion to handle fonts.

Could this problem be due to the ads migrating from CS1...? Would it be best to save all files as .inx files, then open them afresh in CS2.

I agree your point re PDF, I to am not sure of the reliability of placing these files in layouts only to be PDF'd again for press..

    It could be Suitcase.

download the FontAgent Pro demo or Linotypes free Font Explorer and see if you still have the problem.

I still think PDF is a much better option.

Are you saying you save all halftones as PDFs? You don't place .tif or .psd files into your doc? If so, what is the advantage of converting everything to PDF? Thx.

re: Suitcase Fusion, see this thread. He was having issues with files generated with Fusion active too.

Upshot is, there may be an update for it? Also, if you're not running Classic apps any more, Font Explorer is an amazingly nice font manager, imho. And you can't beat the price! Might start doing some tests with it. I'm gradually switching people over from Suitcase X1 to that...

I guess that statement is a little misleading. I place ads and stuff that is supplied as PDF and I make PDFs of pages and place those having no problems. I also place photoshop PDFs for files with text.

But if the file is an image only file then I use PSD and Tiff mostly PSD.
