error 36 when opening a file in Photoshop 4.0

I've been running photoshop 4.0 for a year with now problems on my Dell Dimension 4500 using XP. I have used the same program for years on win 98 with no problems. Recently, when I try to open a fairly large file, 60MB, Adobe freezes up and I get the "error 36-sorry this is fatal" dialog box. Photoshop 5.0 LE came with the Dell and it does open, modify and save the file. What is this problem with 4.0. I see that someone else had this problem back in March but I saw no resolution of the problem.

What file type are you saving the file as? Did you use a color mode not
supported in 4.0? Was it a PSD with layers or channels or paths? We
need a little more info on your end to give you an intelligent answer or
even an educated guess.

Have you ever considered that it may be time for an upgrade?

What is this problem with 4.0.




I read, here in these forums, that 4.0 won't run reliably on XP. It was three software versions ago. <shrug>.

The file was a psd file with layers. I am now finding that my other psd files without layers result in the same problem. Photoshop 5 LE works, but of course is a limited edition. Why is 4.0 suddenly not working?

Have you updated Win XP or maybe you are allowing the automatic updates? That might explain the sudden change in behaviour.

Running PS 4 [or any such vintage software] under XP has got to be suspect. Do consider upgrading. PS 7 has so much more to offer in functionality and ease of use - worth every cent.
