And allied to this, can anyone please tell me why I get an error message when editing something like a title of a page (in the headers) that I have clearly and correctly marked as EDITABLE in my template?.

Anytime I update the page title I get an error message telling me that I've changed code that is in an UNeditable region, and "do you want to continue anyway"...) Well, uh YEAH.

And this is illogical, Captain, since DW won't LET you alter uneditable code in a temple, will it? It just complains and says no-can-do.

Trouble is, when I have to reapply the template for any reason, all my page titles are wiped out and replaced by the dummy title contained in the template.

jason:

It works properly. The error message is thrown when the template engine
tries to change some code somewhere on your page and cannot because that
part of the page is locked.

It means that you have a coding error on the page. Show me the page please.

Here's the code from one of the pages created from the template. Do you need to see the actual template code as well?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<HTML><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/blank New Template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<HEAD><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="title" --><TITLE>The Title of the Article</TITLE><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="Doent head" --><META name="description" content="This is where I put the description of the file etc etc">
<META name="Keywords" content="my boringly long list of keywords here ">
<META name="Author" content="Me"><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->

I have altered the actual title and other content here, for the sake of brevity. Underneath this is the non-editable region of menus, followed by the text part of the doent which I can edit normally.

Does this help?

Hi Murray,
The best thing is for me to send you my template so you can reproduce the error. The attachments box doesn't allow me to do that (is it disabled for this forum, or can I have it switched on somehow?) If no attachments are allowed, I can give you an URL so you can collect a copy yourself. okay?

The error can be reproduced by creating a new page from the template, then typing text into the title section, to replace the dummy title.

On existing the code section or trying to save the file, the error message is given as follows:

"You have made changes to code that is not marked as editable. If you retain those changes they will be lost next time you apply an update to this file. Do you want to retain the changes until then? YES|NO"

Obviously I say Yes, but sure enough when I reapply the template all my titles are wiped out, and any other such changes. I've had the error message for other sections but I honestly can't remember which. But all my changes were in editable regions.

Yes - that's the very best way.

Ahh - well in this case, just copy the head section of the doent and
paste it into a reply. I don't need to see any of the javascript code, just
the <title> tag and its context. So copy from the top of the file to
several lines below the <title> tag.
> and any other such changes.
Where were these changes made?

Maybe you'd better post the URI anyhow.

Here is the URL where you can grab a copy of the template: http://www.banner.org.uk/templates/ it's called "blank New Template.dwt"

As I said earlier, you should be able to reproduce the error by creating a new file from this template and then altering the title text, and saving it.

Yes Murray it does that. (Most websites won't allow you to directly access a folder) But I did provide the file name. If you type the filename into the folder URL you'll get the actual file and can then read the source.

Monty:

You can allow anonymous browsing into directories on most websites.

If you want me to do something like that, you have to tell me to do so.
There is no indication here that this would be the procedure -
> Here is the URL where you can grab a copy of the template:
http://www.banner.org.uk/templates/ it's called "blank New Template.dwt"

You could have just posted http://www.banner.org.uk/templates/blank New
Template.dwt, no?

Anyhow, here are the changes to make to your page -

1. Change this -

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="title" --><title>Title of
Doent</title><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

to this -

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="doctitle" --><title>Title of
Doent</title><!-- TemplateEndEditable -->

(it appears that this editable region MUST be named doctitle!)

2. Change this -

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="Doent head" -->Doent head<!--
TemplateEndEditable -->

to this -

<!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="Doent head" --><!--
TemplateEndEditable -->

Having bare text in the head area could be causing problems.

I think your error message will disappear now.

Murray,
Thanks for your suggestions. I made the changes but still get the error message. So I guess I'll just have to put up with it. There is no reason that I can fathom why Dw does this.

Out of curiosity I opened an old template that I'd made using the previous version of DW, and that did have "doctitle" - when I closed it again it brought up an error message saying "this template does not have any editable regions".

Now that is very odd since I'd been using that template for years without any problems, before. I wonder if the changes in this new version of DW are the problem. I have noticed that, if I open doents created with earlier versions of DW, that when I close them (without having changed anything) DW asks me to "save the changes" - and I'm thinking "what changes?" Maybe the new version handles templates and doents differently.

The only thing I know is that I used to be able to create and use templates, and now I keep getting error messages. When creating templates, selecting a region in the head and asking it to be editable results in the "editable" code shooting much further down the page and ending up in a different region, at random. It then has to be moved manually to the correct place. Thus it seems to me that something is wrong with template handling altogether.

I made those changes I suggested by copying and pasting into a new file.
Although I was getting the error message before, I did not get it after.
Try doing that.

Without a doubt, this means that DMX has found and changed some bit of code
in the file when it is opened. I am certain that a careful examination of
the page will reveal what this problem might be. DMX is much stricter in
its requirement for clean code, and this is why you are seeing that message.

Nothing is random. You cannot put an editable region in the head of a page
using DMX.

Will do. Was this a new doent, or a new template, or doesn't it matter?

Really??? Wow, that is news to me. I need to know more about this, because I have been making my headers editable. It mostly works, apart from the title section as you know. How then do you make the title and keywords, etc editable? Does the template assume that the meta tags are always the same, thus you cannot edit them in a page created from a template?

I feel sure you can't mean that, exactly, because how would anyone alter their meta tags? Could you explain a bit more? Thanks.

Monty:

DMX puts an editable region into the head of the doent for you to use for
this kind of thing.

You can also put one there manually. Put you cannot put one there using the
UI.

On your page, I created a new Template page, and copied and pasted your
content making the changes I recommended.

Having full text bare in the head of the doent is surely going to throw
an error of some sort....
