Admin Utility to work, but nothing seems to allow me to configure. It's
OK for now, because the ABS itself is working beautifully, all the time.
The inability to configure things will become an issue if there's some
kind of essential software update or compatibility issue, but for now I
guess I'll cross my fingers...

your Airport admin software assumes that your base station has a
specific firmware version but it doesn't.
The surefire method of fixing this is to reset the base station
re-configure. During the reconfig process the airport will receive the
correct firmware update and all will be well...usually.
Head over to apple.com to find out how to reset the base station.
Offhand I can't remember.

configure the base station with the Admin Utility. It seems like an
odd/roundabout way to go about things (changing the IP to configure and
then switching back afterwards), but as long as it works...
I'll try to complete the update, my original intention, in a day or so.
